The Most Commonly Eaten Sushi

Sushi

Sushi is probably the most well-known Japanese dish, impressing many by its subtle taste and arrangement on the plate. It comes in different forms and styles, running from traditional sushi bars to modern restaurants that offer a different dining experience. There are certain kinds of sushi most people are familiar with, whether a beginner or an avid sushi lover, due to their general appeal and much more familiar ingredients.

California Roll

California roll is a kind of maki sushi that is filled with crab substitute or real crab, cucumber, and avocado, all in rice and seaweed. It is often sprinkled with sesame seeds or fish roe at the top.

Spicy Tuna Roll

A roll with spicy tuna—normally a mixture of raw tuna, spicy mayo, and sometimes cucumber or avocado—wrapped with rice and seaweed; often drizzled with spicy mayo on top.

Salmon Nigiri

Nigiri is simply a hand form of sushi—vinegared rice in a small mound with a slice of fish or seafood set on top. Salmon nigiri has a tender slice of raw salmon placed atop the rice.

Tuna Nigiri

Tuna nigiri is similar to salmon nigiri except it contains raw tuna instead. The tuna is sliced into thin, tender pieces and laid on top of a pile of rice.

Ebi Nigiri

Ebi nigiri is a cooked shrimp (ebi) seated atop a small ball of rice. The shrimp is typically served with a dollop of wasabi and lightly drizzled soy sauce for dipping.

Cucumber Roll (Kappa Maki)

The cucumber roll, or Kappa Maki, is just a plain maki sushi roll with cucumber and rice, then wrapped in seaweed.

Tempura Roll

Tempura Roll is a type of maki roll that includes tempura, or batter-fried seafood or vegetables, wrapped in rice with seaweed. Avocado or cucumber is often added to the filling.

Dragon Roll

Dragon Roll is another fancy maki roll comprising cooked eel and/or shrimp tempura, along with avocado and cucumber. Further toppings include thinly sliced avocado and a drizzle of eel sauce.
